Located on the M1 Princes Freeway, approximately 150 kilometers and less than two hours east of Melbourne, Morwell is at the centre of the Latrobe Region, one of Australia's key industrial, electricity generation and commercial centres.

Geography
Prior to the restructure of local government, the City of Morwell covered an area 649 square kilometers and had contrasting geographic features, including significant urban areas containing major industrial developments and commercial enterprises, a range of residential areas and a rural area containing rich agricultural river flats and the rain forested slopes of the Strzelecki Ranges.

Rainfall
Morwell's mean annual rainfall is 801mm and on average, experiences its highest monthly rainfall in the months of June, August, September and October. Raindays in these months range from 12 to 14. The driest time of year is February, which has on average on 43mm and 5 days of rain.

Population
The population of the City of Morwell (1996 Census) was 22,801 people, of which 49.4 per cent were male and 50.06 per cent were female.With a trend toward rural residential living, in recent years, Morwell's outlying areas have shown a steady increase in population with many families enjoying the benefits of a country environment whilst living within a short commuting distance of urban areas.

Culture
One of Morwell's strengths is the diversity of nationalities which make up its population.

Migrants from many nations were attracted to Morwell after the Second World War because of the excellent employment opportunities. The diversity of clubs, recreational and entertainment facilities located within Morwell reflects the influence of these nationalities and how many migrants have made a valuable contribution to the culture and lifestyle of Morwell.
