The Community's Garden

This Rose Garden is an outstanding example of what a community can achieve with dedication and hard work. Morwell Rose GardenThe garden started with a gem of an idea from a local councillor back in 1991, who sold the concept to the Council of the day. A site was selected and a public meeting called in December 1991. From that meeting a Steering Committee was formed. This committee has been totally responsible for the project comprising the design, fund raising, construction and on-going maintenance of the garden.

Morwell Rose GardenThe Morwell Chamber of Commerce strongly supported the Rose Garden project, providing the committee with funds to assist in the initiation of the project.

The Garden was officially opened in November 1992.

A sunken garden featuring an impressive arbour commenced construction in April 1995.

The community and Council supported the project very enthusiastically, as evidenced by the levels of donations and assistance given.

Special recognition for the assistance from the Rose Society of Victoria, particularly its President, Barry Johnson, who has had the responsibility for the garden bed layout design and selection of rose varieties.

A very dedicated support group, "The friends of the Garden’, assist with care and on-going maintenance of the roses.

The Morwell Office of Corrections contribution for their support in the construction and on-going maintenance has been invaluable.
